1999 UCLA/USC NAIOP Real Estate Challenge
On April 13th, 1999, Marshall MBA real estate students captured the silver shovel from UCLA in the second annual UCLA/USC NAIOP Real Estate Challenge. The NAIOP Challenge this year asked a question regarding the impact of the new Staples Center on commercial and retail activity on the Figueroa Corridor in downtown Los Angeles. As the winning team, USC was able to contribute $5,000 to the Special Olympics.

Adjudicators included Austin Anderson of Economic Research Associates, Harold Greene of the Bank of America, Stan Moore of Overton Moore and Associates and numerous other real estate industry leaders.
The USC team was comprised of Stephen Benson and Eric Hanke, MBA Class of 1999 and James Colton, Peter Houghton and Steven Ritchie, Class of 2000. David Dale-Johnson, Director of the Program in Real Estate was the faculty advisor to the team. The team participated in a 45 minute presentation and Q and A before the adjudicators and then presented to 200 professionals at a reception and dinner at the Los Angeles Times Printing Facility and brought home the silver shovel, a perpetual trophy to be awarded annually to the wining team.
