- Background Notes produced by the U.S. State Department, contains overviews of countries, their governments and history. Reports are much briefer than the Country Studies listed below.
- Country Commercial Guides are prepared by the U.S. Department of State and give detailed summaries of political and economic conditions, provide guides for marketing U.S. products and describe potential sectors for U.S. investing and exports. Also available through GLOBUS.
- Country Studies: Area Handbooks are prepared by the Library of Congress for U.S. military and foreign service personnel, these offer a brief history of a country, describe its culture and survey the country's economic and political environment. They are book-length reports which can be retrieved a section at a time.

Generally Available Online Resources
ADRs
American Depositary Receipts are one way that U.S. investors can invest in foreign companies. ADRs are not shares of stock. They are held by a custodian for an investor. Even though they are listed as being traded on exchanges, they are not traded as stock on these exchanges. If you use their ticker symbols on web sites that give stock quotes, you will not get a price for them.
There are several sites devoted to ADRs. The companies listed at these sites will vary depending on whether the bank holds these ADRs.
- Bank of New York Global Equity Investing Depositary Receipt Services contains good description of ADRs and how they are traded. Has statistics on ADR issues and profiles of companies with ADRs (in PDF format).

JP Morgan ADR contains profiles, charts, historical financials, and earnings information for companies with ADRs. Allows user chart ADRs in comparison with various indices.
