MEDLINE and Medical Practice Tools

Health Services Technology Assessment Texts (HSTAT)
Provides access to full-text documents for health care decision making. Includes clinical practice guidelines, quick-reference guides for physicians, consumer brochures, and evidence reports from the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research.

MEDLINE and Other National Library of Medicine Databases
Includes free access, through PubMed and Grateful Med, to MEDLINE, AIDSLINE, AIDSDRUGS, AIDSTRIALS, DIRLINE, HealthSTAR (which combines the former HEALTH [Health Planning and Administration] and HSTAR [Health Service/Technology Assessment Research]), HISTLINE and SDILINE databases.  Medline Ovid subscription access is also available through the Norris Medical Library.

The Merck Manual
A feature of the Merck site, which also includes a Disease Infopark.

NIH Clinical Alerts and Advisories
Clinical alerts are provided to expedite the release of findings from NIH-funded clinical trials where such release could significantly affect morbidity and mortality.

Physicians'Desk Reference
A subscription web portal that contains drug information, news alerts, resource center for patients, and a medical dictionary.

American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)
Includes many resources for patient education as well as topics faced by the practitioner, such as budgets for starting practice, health care costs, health care quality issues, etc.

In addition to members-only material, includes current controversies, quality-of-care issues, and many patient advocacy topics.

This database, produced under the direction of the Association of State Medical Board Executive Directors, with information about physicians from a growing number of states. Information on California doctors is updated every two weeks. Includes license number, date licensed, medical school and year graduated.

Center for Studying Health System Change
This nonpartisan policy research organization designs, conducts and issues studies focusing on health care issues affecting the American public. Statistical reports are published at this site free of charge.

Health Care Costs and Utilization Project (H-CUPnet)
Supported by the Dept. of Health & Human Services, this database allows users to generate queries to retrieve national and regional data on hospitals and healthcare trends.  Search their Reports section for comprehensive statistics.

Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation
This non-profit private foundation issues independent research and reports on major health care issues in the U.S.

Council of Medical Specialty Societies
An organization designed to promote communication between medical organizations; includes a news section.

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
Includes performance reports of institutions that have had JCAHO surveys; news and history sections.

National Committee for Quality Assurance
An independent, nonprofit organization that reports on the quality of the nation's managed care organizations; includes listing of summary accreditation reports for various health plans and the full text of HEDIS (Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set). Has separate pages for consumers, employers/unions, government, health-care organizations, providers and researchers.
