The real estate industry can be divided in several different ways. One approach is to divide it by activities: development and construction, appraisal, sales and leasing, and property management. Another way is to divide by type of real estate, i.e., construction, residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Much of the online information focuses on real estate as an investment (REITs/real estate investment trusts).

    DataQuick is a fee-based major producer of housing sales figures. 
  • DataQuick figures from the L.A. Times
    A searchable database of individual home sales in Southern California. This does not provide aggregate numbers.
  • Real Estate Council of Southern California: Real Estate and Construction Report. Contains statistics for seven Southern California counties with comparative state and national data. Has time series and historical data for the region. (Business Library Periodical Stacks). 
  • National Association of Home Builders: Facts, Figures and Statistical Information about the Housing Market
    Contains statistics on home ownership and new home construction pulled from a variety of sources.
  • Case-Schiller Index: compiled by Standard & Poor's. Look under the "Data" tab for free monthly statistics on 20 major U.S. housing markets.
  • National Association of Realtors: Research
  • City-Data.com
    Lists U.S. city profiles that include real estate prices and trends and recent home sales.
  • National Low Income Housing Coalition: Research
  • U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development: U.S. Housing Market Conditions
    Contains statistics on residential real estate, construction, home buying trends, prices, rental and vacancy rates and more. Includes regional and national figures. Also links to historical housing data.
