Step 3. Highlight the first column of data only.
Step 4. Click on "Data" on the Excel menu bar.
Step 5. Click on "Text to Columns."
Step 6. Choose the "Fixed Width" option on the "Convert Text to Columns Wizard" dialog box.
Step 7. Format preview of column or click "Next" or "Finish."

Now you can perform Excel functions on the data!

Hints

  • Use "Copy" instead of "Cut" (You will want an original copy for proofing).
  • When you highlight the table, begin flush to the left edge of the table, including character spaces.
  • After "Finish" check first column of information -- often long text entries may not fit neatly. To correct this, select "Format - Column -AutoFit - Selection," or adjust the column width by dragging the column divider at the top of the spreadsheet.
  • Several vertical tables can be stitched together by continuing to insert tables horizontally. Simply delete any repeated columns when finished.
