World Class Marketing Ph.D. Students

Research Accomplishments of Our PhD Students:

Over the years our Phd students have made significant contributions to the field by publishing in leading journals and winning numerous prestigious research awards. Recognition for our doctoral students include:

  • SCP Sheth Award
  • William O’Dell Award for long term contributions to marketing for articles published in the Journal of Marketing Research.
  • Finalists for the John D. Little Award for best paper in Marketing Science and early career achievement award in marketing.

In addition, their research proposals have received funding from the leading marketing funding organizations such as the Marketing Science Institute (MSI) and the Institute for The Study of Business Markets (ISBM).

Our students have published numerous articles in major research journals as the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science and Management Science among others. We strongly encourage our Ph.D. students to present their research at conferences and to publish in leading journals from an early point in the PhD program. In fact, most of our senior doctoral students have either already published papers or have manuscripts under advanced stages of review at major marketing journals.

Our recent placements include strong research business schools such as Dartmouth, Cornell, Boston University, Emory, Georgia, NYU, Ohio State, Queens, Rutgers, Texas A&M, the University of British Columbia, University of Minnesota and University of Wisconsin, Madison.  Further, in the process of applying for tenure track positions, our students have had campus visits at other leading business schools, including London Business School, Stanford, University of California, Berkeley and Wharton.

PhD Program Culture:

The culture of the PhD program in the Department of Marketing is research focused, collegial, supportive, and highly interactive. PhD students are viewed as “junior colleagues” and are encouraged to become involved in academic research with faculty early in their careers.

Students are assigned a faculty advisor for their first two years and learn research fundamentals through research assistantships with various faculty members. As they progress through their doctoral program, students work with a faculty guidance committee and then a dissertation committee as they prepare for their qualifying exams and dissertations. The relatively low PhD student/faculty ratio coupled with the faculty’s “open door” policy allows for frequent and meaningful interactions between faculty and students regarding research, careers and teaching.

The research environment of the department is further enhanced by scholarly presentations from invited faculty from around the world, internal brown bag seminars, and colloquia with other research-oriented universities in the Southern California area.

What some of our past PhD students have to say about their Experience:

“My time at USC has had an impact on every aspect of my life as an academic. I met some of my closest mentors and some of my dearest friends…we learned so much about thinking originally.” – Rajesh Chandy (Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota, Finalist of the William O' Dell award for contributions to marketing for Journal of Marketing Research in 2003. Graduated in 1996.)

“The skills that I learned and the passion for doing research that was cultivated in the program have enabled me to have a life-long career in academia.” – Peter Golder (Associate Professor at NYU and 2003 Award Winner for Early Career Contributions to Marketing Strategy. Graduated in 1994.)

Deepa Chandrasekaran

"While every PhD student looks eagerly for the light at the end of the tunnel (securing the degree), I must 'confess' that I had a great time with the process itself. I acquired many practical skills--how to find an interesting research topic, how to write a paper, how to critique a paper, how to analyze empirical problems and so on. But, more importantly, I studied under professors who truly loved what they were doing--be it research or teaching, I got a chance to take courses that made me appreciate the 'philosophy' angle of the degree and I made great friends who made and continue to make my life pleasanter." -- Lehigh University

Vanessa Patrick

"I will always think of my years in the doctoral program at Marshall as the most fulfilling and intellectually stimulating period of my academic life. The doctoral program helped instill in me the values to pursue an academic career, and provided me the tools to grow as a scholar and a teacher. I believe that the stimulating research environment in the marketing department and the supportive and wonderful professors and staff will continue to raise the doctoral program to even greater heights. I can truthfully say that the doctoral program brought out the best in me, and for that I am very grateful." -- University of Georgia, Athens

Rajesh Chandy

"My time at USC has had an impact on every aspect of my life as an academic. I met some of my closest mentors and dearest friends while at USC. We learned so much about thinking originally; about writing simply and clearly; about caring for your students and colleagues and about enjoying what you do. They say that in LA, you can go skiing in the morning, and hit the beaches in the afternoon of the same day. I never did manage to accomplish this feat. But perhaps this was because we were already having plenty of fun and excitement as doctoral students at USC! I am grateful to have had the chance to learn from many of the leading scholars in marketing. I am doubly grateful that I got to do so in an atmosphere that was so full of kindness, friendship, and fun." – University of Minnesota

  Kersi Antia

“The opportunity to flourish in a non-threatening learning environment, with complete "knock on door" access to faculty members working on a variety of cutting edge research topics, was perhaps the most appreciated feature of the Trojan experience. In addition, what still sticks out in my memory is the esprit de corps among the doctoral students, across area groups and cohorts. I still have very fond memories of working long hours on projects and assignments, and preparing for qualifying examinations, with absolutely wonderful peers. I strongly believe our experience at USC bound us together, as we continue to work as co-authors on research. Thank you, USC!” - University of Western Ontario

   Peter Golder

"I learned more during my four years in the PhD program than at any other time in my life. And I really enjoyed the whole process too. The marketing department faculty, indeed all of the business school faculty, were extremely friendly and helpful. They treated me more like a colleague than a student. The skills that I learned and the passion for doing research that was cultivated in the program have enabled me to have a life-long career in academia. For that and for the friendships that began at USC, I will be grateful always. New York University

Joseph Johnson

“The doctoral program at USC is designed to allow for both discipline and flexibility. The discipline imparts rigor while the flexibility imparts intellectual freedom. The faculty is drawn from every possible intellectual stripe providing a unique environment for high quality research. The mentorship provided by the faculty and the continuing support they provide is every bit as useful as the formal program.” - University of Miami

  Yiding Yin

“The program taught me so much in preparing for a career in academics. Professors are extremely research-oriented and this atmosphere is highly motivating for every member of this department. It puts the doctoral student into the right mindset early on.” – Cambridge University
